The Full Story
As a certified civil mediator, Janet Madden Charles brings 40 years of business, legal, and community leadership to her practice. As CEO of a commercial construction firm, Janet successfully incentivized quality, innovation, efficiency, and professionalism. She served two terms as chairwoman of the industry’s globally-recognized trade organization. During her two-term tenure, the group members successfully collaborated by publishing the industry’s first design and maintenance guidelines and standards.
Janet understands that civil litigation and, in turn, civil mediation is about economics. She has a learned and experienced approach and the objectivity and independence required to be a fair-minded skilled neutral. Graduating in accounting from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, she started her career as a CPA and practiced with the public accounting firm PWC. While practicing with the law firm Faegre Drinker as a tax attorney, she represented many complex and sophisticated clients. Because tax laws can uniquely affect different industries, Janet’s practice included “test cases” for specific industries. She co-authored the ABA Deskbook on Indiana Property Taxation. Janet graduated magna cum laude from IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
Among her many community and civic responsibilities, Janet served as chairwoman of the Board of Ethics for the City of Indianapolis. The Board of Ethics is responsible for reviewing and advising on conflicts of interest within the City government. Building consensus around difficult issues was her leadership style. She also served as a Board member of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and Chairwoman of the YWCA.
Janet’s seasoned and diverse experience influences her mediation approach. At its core is a dedication to proper planning, preparedness, discipline, and organization. To credibly guide the parties towards formulating an acceptable dispute resolution, she is open-minded, fully engaged, and communicative.
